A few years ago, I did a talk to the London Java Community entitled “Don’t Keep It To Yourself — Openness and Honesty in the Workplace”.
About halfway through the talk, after talking about the impact of being unable to be honest in the workplace, I asked the audience whether they felt safe enough at work, to be honest with those around them.
On a show of hands, more than half the audience didn’t think they could be honest with those they work with for forty hours a week.
That sounds crazy, doesn’t it?
It happens because they don’t have psychological safety at work.
