Product Managers need to know the general rules of design

The design of a product can deliver on its goals or lead to its demise and as such the product manager, whose responsibility it is to deliver on product goals, needs to be heavily involved in the process.

That doesn’t mean standing over the designer's shoulder and asking “When will the next iteration be ready?”, it means actually understanding the fundamentals of design and contributing to the discussion.
